Imperial officials on Negromundheim sent out troops to secure the way from Hive Secundus (which had then recently been attached to the imperial colony) to the rest of the imperial territories. To that purpose, several groups were sent in and around the swamps, and near the Broll river.
After that unforeseen stroke of hard luck, the imperial governor decided to have the job done by mercs rather than send his best available troops against a yet undetermined enemy. He therefore hired a group of Hastasiemprite mercenaries in Sylboudcity and sent them secure the ways across the Broll river. As soon as it reached the forest of Snul, the group of mercenaries was attacked by some ghoulish mutants, which they repelled but eventually failed to exterminate.
With this new mission cancelled, the governor finally took the risk to go for a larger scale operation: operation "caravan" was to eradicate all visible mutant presence on the way to Hive Secundus, for it seemed it was still far from being safe.
And indeed, some had escaped and a wave of terrorism began to strike the population and installations of Hive Secundus: mutants directly attacked innocent citizens, public places and even famous rock star Eddi. They also lead a few guerilla operations against the Imperial authorities ; overall, however their actions were quite unsuccessful, and pretty soon they became a minor and occasional disturbance for Hive Secundus. But they were still there, the few survivors crawling underneath the city and its surroundings...
Things got hot when Governor Hieronymus sent more Hastasiemprite mercenaries into the wastelands south of Hive Primus, to wipe the mutant tribes out of them. The expedition was as swift and brutal as you'd expect it from Hastasiemprites, but the worm-like aliens encountered fierce resistance from the mutants led by a freak called the Corroder, and their advance was delayed enough for the minions of The Circle of New Mankind to fall back. The Empire was playing with fire, and in spite of the Squat Consortium and the Corporation's verbal support, Veh Deh Merd was then very likely not to leave the attack unpunished, and several unexplained incidents took place in Hive Secundus. It was the ArchMessiah of Defecation who got the privilege to retaliate in the name of Veh Deh Merd ; his troops, led by Colonel X, managed to clear the way for gnome partisan reinforcements from the north. The war was openly declared when the Mutant spearhead took Bunker 13. With this outpost lost so quickly, the Empire was in an uneasy situation. The Empire counter-attacked and managed to contain the relentless mutant offensive for a while. Colonel X's troops eventually managed to break through the imperial lines and rampaged around the city of Altmar.
Without warning, the Star & Moon launched an offensive against Veh Deh Merd – the mutants were surprised, and it took a while before they could gather up enough forces to face the Star & Moon forces, which killed and raped hundreds of mutants in the villages south of Veh Deh Merd. An end was put to the offensive when the dreaded Mad Moo was hired by the Assembly of the Wise (Veh Deh Merd's high council of ass-licking dominators) to stop the Star & Moon progression. Soon afterwards, however, Star & Moon forces had to be called back home because of the incidents in the Desert of Blood: armies from all over were expected to cross the region to get hold of a copy of the Negronomicon, allegedly discovered in a shrine underneath a former Imperial Monastery now occupied by a mercenary corps, the Desert Dogs. The Assembly of the Wise eventually decided to reallocate their resources and seize the unique opportunity to seize the Book of Darkness. They sent Dominator Four Manchu to the Desert of Blood, Colonel X was asked to put an end to his raid and secure the territories he had gained. Much to the Empire's relief, the war with Veh Deh Merd was at a standstill.
While Duchesse was supervising Politburo investigations in the Desert of Blood, Kommander Tataiev convinced the Party to launch an offensive on the independent territories around Stern. Stern is a city-state which, in the absence of a regular army, can only rely on its citizen militias to defend itself. With most of the other nations busy in the Desert of Blood, Tataiev thought it was a unique opportunity to conquer the city unpunished, provided the operation was swift. Although several Kommanders, including Kommander Grigor Ontsatiev, volunteered to lead the expedition, it was Tataiev who was chosen by the Party to do it. He decided to fight it the Tataiev way and therefore requisitioned a large quantity of "conventional" troops ; he was even granted access to the armoured arsenal. He also hired gangers from Necrobutchergrad to flood the defenders with troops once he reached Stern. His forces got to Stern without facing any opposition – the defenders of Stern simply didn’t stand a chance if they faced the NeoSoviet armor in the open. Once in the city, however, Tataiev had to reconsider his plans...
